Tern Nesting Rafts

Over the past 20 years, Aquatic Consultancy has worked with many partners and agencies to develop an economical, yet robust modular system which is versatile enough to be adapted for a wide range of nesting species and environments.

Reliable and effective buoyancy, in whatever form it’s constructed, never comes cheap. However, by utilising environmentally safe and acceptable materials, from some of the UK’s leading companies, we have developed an unsinkable system manufactured from reliable components. Along with this we have designed and now manufacture many of the galvanised aspects required on our rafts.

Product development never ‘stands still’ for us. We welcome opportunities to work in collaboration with clients to develop their conceptual vision into a successful installation.

The predator-deterrent modular systems we have developed for our nesting platforms, floating reedbeds and islands mean we can easily develop hybrids of all three to include sparsely–densely planted multi-functional nesting islands as required. Whether terns, swans, grebes, or wildfowl we can collaborate to create a successful system.

Nesting Raft

You will be very pleased to hear that the floating tern platform was the most successful nesting site this year.  It has been a extremely difficult year for common tern with high egg failure or chick mortality due to some nasty weather.  We made several abortive trips out to ring chicks only to find that they had perished. However, late in the season we managed to ring 4 chicks on the Coneries platform- perhaps sheltered from the raw conditions by the solid sides.”

“Today’s highly successful launch of the Great Crested Grebes rafts on Talybont reservoir. I would particularly like to thank the: staff of Aquatic Engineering, Rangers of DCWW, volunteers from Friends of Talybont Reservoir, and Ben who joined us at 1/2 hour’s notice! Both rafts are at the southern end, approximately in line with the ‘older’ bird hide.

The Grebes were already showing their appreciation as we left!”
